The singularity of the regions in the Iberian Peninsula has led to a great wealth of manifestations in the field of craftsmanship.
For this reason, in Spain by Día Libre we offer the possibility of living a unique experience by stepping into our Iberian culture and getting close to the essence of our tradition through our finest artisans in Madrid.
For that purpose, we have designed artisanal tours of the most representative artisans of our cultural heritage. Spain is a country rich in traditions that are reflected in its landscape, flavors and unique creations.

We give you the opportunity to have a personal encounter with the best artisans of Madrid at their workshops. This unique experience can be anything from finding out how Flamenco guitars are made for top artists such as Paco de Lucía or the traditional wine Bota-bag that Ernest Hemingway made known to the rest of the world in his literary work.
And in addition to our luthier and our wine bota-bag artisan, you can meet our jeweler, traditional waxworker, ceramist craftswoman, traditional espartero, tailor to the toreadors, tapestry masters, masters of the Spanish cape, leather craftsmen and bookbinders.

Accompanied by our specialized bilingual guides, you can experience a total immersion in the history and curiosities of each of the neighborhoods and traditional corners where the workshops are located. And also, since our routes are tailor-made, you can include other experiences to your liking: gastronomic, wine tasting, etc.

We are madly in love with Barcelona and all that it has to offer. It is not only a city in which Gaudí left his mark, but also overflows History, Gastronomy, Urban Art and a taste for good fashion. And although it has always been said that it is a city that lives on its back to the sea, we want you to see it from the front.

So we are going to offer you one of our most fun and relaxing plans that will make you look face to face to the Mediterranean: spend a day with your friends or family in an exclusive yacht on the Costa Brava.

In the morning we leave Barcelona and sail for two hours along the Catalan coast to reach the municipality of Girona de Blanes, known as “The Portal of the Costa Brava”. From there we will go to a small cove hidden between a pine forest where our captain will throw the anchor so that we can enjoy a bath surrounded by the landscape. Its shallow and rocky bottom allow us to snorkel in its crystalline waters, where we will discover a varied fauna and flora.

Then we recommend you to access with the auxiliary dingy to a bar right in the cove, where you can enjoy authentic Mediterranean food with sea views. For those who prefer to eat in the port of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, we also offer an option to taste the best fish and seafood or fusion sushi with the latest creations by chef Naoyuki Haginoya. Once we have satiated our appetite, what better plan than to return to the boat and relax under the Mediterranean breeze?

If you prefer a completely nautical plan, we also have the option of tasting tapas or a paella served by a waiter or let you be surprised by our chef aboard.

In the afternoon we will return to the port to see the sunset with a glass of cava after having enjoyed the best coves of the Costa Brava and have furrowed its waters in the greatest comfort.

Did you still think Barcelona couldn’t surprise you?

If, as Dante said, the wine sows poetry in our hearts, Marqués de Riscal writes it in the Rioja Alavesa.

Wines of the heirs of the Marquis of Riscal has created the City of Wine, a complex located in Elciego, composed of the Old Winery Marqués de Riscal, which is already 160 years old, and a new Avant-Garde building that houses the Marqués de Riscal Hotel and the Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie. Inside the hotel is located the Gourmet Restaurant Marqués de Riscal, awarded with a Michelin Star, and also the restaurant 1860 Tradition, for those who are looking for a more casual dinner or meal without losing elegance. The designer of this unique building is no other than Frank O. Gehry, the controversial architect of the Guggenheim of Bilbao and currently considered one of the most influential ones in the world. It seems that Marqués de Riscal not only seeks to achieve perfection with its wines, but also with the aesthetics of its Wine City.

The hotel belongs to the selection of The Luxury Collection Hotels of Marriott International, and has 33 rooms, 9 executive suites and a Gehry Suite where you can contemplate the winery and the vineyards, the undulating vines of the building or the picturesque village Elciego and the mountains of the Sierra de Cantabria. In addition to its unique spa, within the hotel you can also enjoy an indoor swimming pool, business center and meeting rooms.

For lovers of this broth, it is essential to start the day with the tour of the emblematic winery including a wine tasting with Denomination of Origin Rioja and Rueda and an exquisite appetizer. After this private visit of about two and a half hours of duration, we recommend to enjoy a fantastic meal in the afore mentioned Gourmet Restaurant Marqués de Riscal, managed by Francis Paniego, in which you can get delight with its Traditional and Avant-Garde Cuisine, besides, of course, its excellent wine list. Its two tasting menus, of 14 and 21 plates respectively, have been elaborated with local seasonal products that are combined to create a perfect harmony.

Other offered options are the Restaurant 1860 Tradition, also managed by Paniego, or El Jardín del Chef, where you can enjoy a “show cooking menu” with views of the vineyards.

In the afternoon, a tour of the streets and squares of Elciego will take you to different points of history that have left their mark in the Rioja Alavesa. After this walk between its winding streets and stores, we return to the City of Wine to walk between the vineyards or to continue enjoying its facilities.

After this visit, we only can say that it seems that we are just in the right place for architecture, history, design, and good wine lovers.

It is no coincidence that the Lonely Planet Guide has chosen Seville as the best city in the world to visit in 2018. Beyond its monuments, Seville has a magic sense that has conquered both national and international visitors. This mysterious charm that some call ´duende´ makes us come back again and again, and so we have decided to give you some tips to enjoy the city as we like, with your five senses.

Sense of View: The bad thing is not that Sevillians believe that they have the most beautiful city in the world, the worst thing is that they may be right. This statement by Antonio Gala sums up very well what we feel about the Andalusian capital and each of its corners.

Seville has the biggest Historic Quarter in Spain and one of the three largest ones in Europe, and its winding and narrow streets have much to tell. We are in a land ruled by the Romans, by the Muslims and with a great Jewish influence in the Low Middle Ages. This mixture of cultures is manifested in a city that has monuments such as the Cathedral, the Torre del Oro (the Golden Tower), the Pilates House, the Alcázar Gardens and the Santa Cruz and Santa María la Blanca neighborhoods. Walking around the center will take you to different moments of history: Keep your eyes wide open and enjoy the trip.

Sense of Touch: Let yourself be pampered by this city in the Arabian Air Baths, dedicated to the relaxation of body and mind in a Mudejar palace a few meters from the cathedral. An exclusive and cosy space that offers different activities: Thermal Baths, Massages, Skin Procedures, Aquatic Rutines… After all, and after all the walking, you deserve a break.

Sense of Taste: You’ve heard about tapas, haven’t you? In front of the Giralda you will find one of the most popular and crowded streets of Seville: Mateos Gago. There are some of the most authentic tapas bars in the capital, such as La Sacristía, Las Columnas, La Fresquita or Casa Tomate, which are just some of the many establishments where thousands of Sevillians and tourists come together to enjoy the good living and good Sevillian climate.

Sense of Hearing: You don’t just have to visit Seville, you have to live it. You can’t leave this city without enjoying a real show in the Flamenco Capital of the World. Our recommendation is to visit the Flamenco Museum of Cristina Hoyos, in the heart of the city, where every day, as the last activity, there is a date with the singing, the dancing, and with the guitar. It is time to sharpen your ears and listen to the great cast of artists that every night they perform on its stage, which has already become a world reference place.

Sense of Smell: What does Sevilla smell like? The experts in walking along its streets are clear: Orange Blossoms, Incense and ´Adobo´ (conservation technique elaborated primarily with vinegar and paprika) on Calle Tetuan. Spring is the best time to visit the Andalusian Capital, as the orange trees have just blossomed and the pleasant smell of your flower accompanies you wherever you go. In addition, with a bit of luck you can enjoy two of their best holidays: Easter and the April Fair.

There is no need to say that Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. As Machado said, all cities have their charm, but Granada has its own and that of all the others. It is a must stop on your trip to Spain, and that is why we are going to help you out with the planning of a day in this city of incomparable Arab aroma. Open your eyes and do not miss any details!

We have just arrived at Granada and it’s 9 in the morning. The best way to start the day is, of course, with a good breakfast. We recommend starting our way at the Kiosko Las Titas, which we find on the Paseo de las Bombas, in the heart of Granada, surrounded by gardens and the Genil River. We relax with a coffee on its terrace because an intense day awaits us.

After breakfast, we take advantage of its location and take a walk through the Historic Center of the city, visiting its Cathedral and the Capilla Real, masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance. Before heading towards the Alhambra, we also pass through the Fuente de las Batallas and the Carrera de la Virgen.

We walk through the district of El Realejo, the old Jewish Quarter, on our way to The Alhambra. Once we get there, we recommend to take a guided tour of its palaces, gardens and fortresses. Do not forget to take your ticket including the Gardens of the Generalife, which are outside the walls of the Alhambra and were a Recreational Estate of the Nasrid Sultans until the Reconquest of the Kingdom by the Catholic Monarchs.

It is time for lunch and the Parador, within the enclosure of the Alhambra, seems a perfect place to satisfy our appetite. We can enjoy typical dishes such as the Nasrid Breua, monkfish in Mozarabic sauce, Alpujarras-style goat, or the cake of the convent of San Francisco, in a quiet and authentic environment. After the meal we can take the opportunity to visit the palace of Charles V and the Museum of the Alhambra, one of the most visited in Andalusia.

The descent to Granada is done down the Cuesta de los Chinos (Slope of the Tiny Stones), named for its paved ground. After turning left on the bridge that crosses the river we reached the Paseo de los Tristes (Walking of the Sad ones), so named for being the place where the Funeral Processions passed by, on the way to the cemetery. For many, this street that borders the Darro River and offers breathtaking views of the Alhambra is one of the most beautiful in Granada.

After seeing the historical buildings, terraces and shops where we can buy souvenirs on the Paseo de los Tristes, we enter the Albaicín, a neighbourhood with an enormous Arab influence declared a Historical Patrimony of Humanity. The Tea Shop El Bañuelo is a good option to make a little break and recover strength. It is a small and very old place with an ideal location that allows us to enjoy some sweet Arabs and tea in front of the palaces of the Alhambra. Then we can take a walk along the street Caldedería and visit their typical markets where we can buy souvenirs or spices and it looks like the Little Marrakech.

The afternoon is on the verge of falling, so we go up to the Mirador de Nicolás to enjoy a beautiful sunset, right in front of the Alhambra and probably enlivened by some countryman who sings and plays the guitar.

We now enter La Cueva de la Rocío, in Sacromonte, on the hill of Valparaiso, a picturesque and idyllic place and traditional Arrabal of the Gypsies of Granada. We will enjoy dinner over there and an authentic Flamenco Show by the Mayan family, a gypsy family with great tradition and the cradle of great artists in the flamenco world.

To end the day we go to El Huerto of Juan Ranas and enjoy a drink on its terrace with amazing views.

After this intense visit to the city, we are probably looking forward to having a rest. We recommend the 5* Hotel Palace of Santa Paula, an old Moorish house built in the 12th century. It is just a pleasant 10 minute walk, and this way we can end a fantastic day in this city full of charm and mystery.

During March this year, the Grand Hotel Inglés in Madrid was reopened, located at Calle Echegaray 8, in the well-known ‘Barrio de las Letras’ or ´Literacy Quarter´.This luxury hotel with 48 rooms is the oldest in Madrid, and since its inauguration has shown that it still retains the class and style of the 19th and 20th centuries that characterize it.

It was officially opened on December 16, 1886 under the management of Agustín Ibarra, who invested “$90,000” in the project, about €2,700, that were used to create this Luxury Hotel which at that time had 110 rooms. Although the location is the same as today, what we know today as Calle Echegaray then was Calle Lobo, named in honor of a hunter who lived there and exposed the skin of the animal at the door of his house.

In 1892 it was named a First Class Establishment for its excellent decoration and service, as well as for the prestige of the guests who stayed there. The appointment was published in all the newspapers of the world and made it gain the world fame that still holds.

In 1907 several Spanish literary female writers paid tribute to the English writer Rachel Challice among its walls, and this love of literature is still present in a reading room that recalls the old libraries of the manor houses of Madrid and has 600 volumes. Great National and International writers have stayed at the Grand Hotel Inglés since its inauguration, such as Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Benito Pérez Galdós or Virginia Wolf.

During the years of the Spanish Civil War the hotel functioned as a hospital to serve the needs of the moment, after which it reopened under the name Hotel Imperio to show the sympathy of the country towards ‘el Eje’ (During WWII, the bloc formed by Berlin-Rome-Tokyo against the Allies). In those times the rooms still didn´t have bathrooms, so its guests had to cross the corridor in search of the ladies or gentlemen’s restrooms. The reform that provided a bathroom to each room was carried out in 1964, and reduced the number of rooms from 110 to 58.

In 2008 the city of Madrid paid tribute to the accommodation with a commemorative plaque that can still be seen in its lobby. A few years later, what had been the most luxurious and important hotel in the capital in the 20s, closed its doors for more than 5 years until March 2018. Its rebirth comes hand in hand with Hidden Away Hotels and its goal is clear: to recover the elegance, sophistication and comfort that have always defined it.

However, the financial team regrets not being able to keep the prices of 4 pesetas per Room and 12 pesetas per Full Board published in January 1914 in the newspaper Crónica. As they justify, the cost of living has gone up a lot since the times of Don Agustín …

San Sebastian has everything to be a paradise in the North of Spain: Beaches, Mountains and its impressive Gastronomic Culture are just some of the gifts that the capital of San Sebastian has to offer us. Within this Eden, we are also very lucky to find the perfect refuge for a luxury getaway that could be summarized in excellence, innovation and avant-garde, the three terms that define the style of Akelarre.

In 1970 its world-renowned restaurant was born on the slopes of Mount Igueldo, just 10 minutes from the City Center, and since 2006 it has three Michelin Stars under the management of Pedro Subijana. The maximum expression of Basque Cuisine and the New Avant-Garde style are fused in its dishes and make us consider it a must in any visit to San Sebastian. Within its menu, the classic dishes of Akelarre allow us to know the most typical ones of its cuisine, while with the proposals Aranori and Bekarki we enjoy their most recent recipes.

The chef’s desire to excel led him to expand the project, with the opening of the hotel with the same name in 2017. This way, Subijana creates a complete experience in which the main goal is always the customer’s total satisfaction.

The hotel has 22 rooms in three categories: Double Sea View, Deluxe Sea View and Akelarre Suite. In addition to all the amenities offered by the other categories, its two suites have a small heated pool overlooking the sea. We are in the perfect environment to disconnect from the world and take a small break.

Pedro Subijana ends the materialization of his dream with a space dedicated to comfort and relaxation. Its 800 square meters of spa, with three treatment cabins, sauna, steam bath and heated pool, pamper our body and mind in a privileged location overlooking the sea. The circuit ends in a relaxation area where you can enjoy a tea on one of the sun loungers in front of the Cantabrian Sea. If you are one of those who disconnects with a good exercise session, Akelarre also puts at your disposal a gym with state-of-the-art machines open 24 hours a day.

The time has come for you to live the Akelarre experience. Gozatu bidaia!
