Enjoy San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe joins the mainland through a stone bridge and a stretch of land formed by two large arches. The bridge is transformed into a narrow path with 241 steps that goes from one side to the other, in zigzag, to the top where this picturesque hermitage is located. Once you reach the top, you will see a bell on the front wall of the church. Legend has it that, upon arriving in Bermeo, San Juan took three major steps before reaching the hermitage. The last of them, in the last step of access, where is his “footprint”, which gives good luck to whoever touches it.

Description

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe stands in front of the Biscay coast as one of the greatest jewels of the Basque Country, a space, in which travelers from all over the world converge to meet in person one of the most acclaimed natural wonders of the world. What was once the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, has been transformed into a peninsula by the human being by building on the tidal flat the narrow road that takes us to its highest point. A road that makes it possible for this Basque enclave to have become one of the most visited places in the north of the peninsula.
