GUETARIA – The Txakoli paradaise

20 minutes away from San Sebastián is Guetaria, the birthplace of Juan Sebastián el Cano, the first man to go around the world and who gives its name to the Spanish marine school, is also the birthplace of the universal designer Cristobal Balenciaga, whose museum we will visit. Our private guide will share, for half a day, his knowledge about the fascinating history of this small Roman town of origin and medieval construction. Between two mountains, on the sea, with the most complete view of the coast of the whole Basque Country. Its fishing port, formerly whaling, provides fish in all the kitchens of the area and the canneries of the famous anchovy of Guetaria. Delicay that we will combine in our route by the Txakolindegui, wineries of white or pink wine, called txacoli, in one of which we will eat with a view over the vineyards

In addition, Getaria is the cradle of some historical figures as Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristóbal Balenciaga.

We will enjoy a tour through the old quarter of Getaria, visiting the church of San Salvador and learning about the basque naval heritage and enjoying stories about great sailors as Juan Sebastián Elcano.

After this, we will visit a Txakolindegui, winery where the famous « Txakoli », the basque sparkling wine is made, with a tasting. For lunch, we will visit a traditional restaurant in the heart of Getaria.

Following lunch, we´ll visit Cristobal Balenciaga museum located in the new annex of Aldamar Palace. As a curiosity, its placement in a hill makes this enclave be the one which crowns the village.
